On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, the research project “Church and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire” organizes a webinar on church and slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean (15.00-17.00 CET). The project has invited two experts to talk about this subject:

Dr. Frank Jabini

The Surinamese scholar Frank Jabini (1965) studied Biblical Studies, Theology, and Bible Translation Studies at the Caribbean College of the Bible and the VU Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD degree from Zululand University in 2004, with the dissertation Translation and Missions in Suriname. He has published several Dutch and English books on theology and church history. His latest book is The History of Christianity in Suriname (2023).

Dr. Armando Lampe

Armando Lampe (1958) is an Aruban scholar and politician. He studied theology and sociology at Radboud University and Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico City), and he obtained his PhD degree at the VU Amsterdam in 1988. He worked as a priest, teacher, and politician in Aruba, and served as Minister of Education in Aruba from 2017 to 2021. He published numerous books and articles on the church history of Latin America and the Caribbean region, one of them being Mission or Submission? Moravian and Catholic missionaries in the Dutch Caribbean during the 19th century (2001).
